There are real, tangible solutions to improving police and community relationships. One way to do this is by ensuring regular people are part of the answer. Everyone wants a safe neighborhood to live, work, and play in. And everyone wants to trust law enforcement officers who take on the duty to protect and serve.
When individual members of law enforcement break that trust with violence or brutality against members of our community, the Law Enforcement Officer Bill of Rights (LEOBOR) stands in the way of justice and fairness. LEOBOR prevents the public from accessing police misconduct records or from having a Community Review Board. We need these key elements of transparency in order to build trust between our law enforcement officers and community.
Amending LEOBOR is about re-building safe and secure neighborhoods. With community-led police reform, Delaware can have safer neighborhoods and stronger communities.
The Reimagining Public Safety Campaign focuses on transparency and improving community and law enforcement relationships by working to amend the Law Enforcement Officer Bill of Rights (LEOBOR). By amending LEOBOR, the public will have access to police misconduct records and will have the ability to form Community Review Boards that can hold hearings when police misconduct occurs.
Our campaign will draw together the most impacted communities, including Black and Latino, immigrant and working class communities to advocate for reforming LEOBOR. With a little people power, we can make a big difference in improving police-community relationships and ultimately create safer neighborhoods across Delaware.
